The rolling hills and green pastures of Monroe signal the reason you have considered a visit to the south central region of Wisconsin. Considered the southern gateway to “Cheese Country,” and “the Swiss Cheese Capital of the USA”, Monroe lends itself to an area of rich dairy farming.
Sample the best of the season at a farmer’s market. Enjoy a gallery exhibit or an outdoor concert. Stroll the downtown square. Bike or ATV. Picnic in a park. Shop til you drop. Discover cafes and authentic ethnic eateries. Find out how malt and hops are transformed into beer, and how milk turns into cheese. Choose your favorites of both to take along and enjoy at home.
Experience the breweries of Green County for a sampling of the local brews. The Minhas Craft Brewery, one of the oldest breweries in the country, and the nearby New Glarus Brewery, home of the famous Spotted Cow, both offer daily tours and tastings. The Cheese Country Trail, the only ATV trail in southern Wisconsin, extends 47 miles to the west and a convenient ATV route within the City of Monroe is provided for gas, food, and lodging.
The Green County Courthouse, completed in 1891, is the center of Monroe’s Historic Square surrounded by shops. A photo opportunity awaits you when you don the robe and sit in the judge’s chamber. At days end, enjoy Swiss Heritage and ethnic cuisine at the numerous restaurants and hotels within the city. An addition to dozens of events and festivals, Monroe hosts Green County Cheese Days, one of the oldest and largest festivals in the Midwest. Green County Cheese Days is held in even-numbered years on the third week end of September.
