Discover the National Historic Cheesemaking Center Museum and Green County Welcome Center located in Monroe, Wisconsin, a friendly historic community surrounded by the rolling hills of dairy farming and cheesemaking in the Heart of America’s Dairyland
The National Historic Cheesemaking Center Museum located in the Green County Welcome Center tells the history of cheesemaking in Wisconsin, complete with cheese factory replicas, including an “ode to Limburger,” which has been produced in Green County since the mid-1800’s. Graced with two huge copper cheesemaking kettles on the front lawn along with a Holstein cow named Honey Belle, this shrine to the local cheese and dairy industries is located an a beautifully restored railroad depot (years ago the freight room was often filled with Green County cheese awaiting rail transport to areas all over the USA).
The Imobersteg Farmstead Cheese Factory – A Rare Historic Gem! On site is the Imobersteg Farmstead Cheese Factory where you can step back into the late 1800’s more than 100 years ago to experience this authentic historic one-kettle farmstead cheese factory that produced Brick, Swiss and Limburger using milk from the 40 cow herd of the Imobersteg Farm. The factory and original equipment sat untouched from 1917 until 2009, when it was relocated to Monroe. All the original equipment can be viewed in this factory that was once used for producing cheese.
